A Study on the Attitudes of Nursing Students toward the Elderly


Abstract
This study was performed to produce baseline data for helping geriatric nursing education of junior nursing college students.
The purpose of this study was to measure the attitude of nursing students toward the elderly and to investigate the factors affecting on it.
The subjects were 446 nursing students of K junior nursing college.
The investigating period was from June 7 to 17, 1994 and questionnaire was used. Analysis of data was done by frequency, percentage, mean, S.D, ANOVA, T-test, Scheffe test.
The results were as follows:
1. The attitude score of nursing students was M= 71.622, S.D= 14.045. Nursing students agreed with 54.7 % of the stereotypic statements.
2. There was significant difference in nursing students attitude score according to degree of satisfaction for nursing (P < 0.01).
3. There was significant difference in nursing students attitude score according to the experience with relatives and acquaintances over 65 years of age (P < 0.01).
4. There were no significant differences in nursing students¢¥ attitude score according to the students grade (freshman, sophomore, junior), students age, sibling numbers, religion, preferred patient age in nursing care, preferred working part in nursing after graduation, clinical experience with the geriatric patients, experience of living with elderly family members.
